How do Compression Socks and Stockings work?
Compression socks and stockings have come a long way due to new technologies and materials. They look and feel just like normal socks. These work by “gradient compression” which means that the strongest compression is at the ankle. The pressure is gradually reduced in the sock as it moves up the calf which helps to move the blood up the leg, back to the heart, against the pull of gravity. This prevents the blood from flowing backwards down the leg. The major cause of internal pressure and swelling on the veins is this blood flowing backwards. Compression socks are a great non-invasive way to relieve this pressure, swelling and pain.

Types of Compression Socks and Stockings:

Anti-embolism stockings: Anti-embolism stockings are worn for comfort after surgery and when you need to stay in bed. These are designed to prevent development of DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). These come in different sizes and strengths and we can suggest the best ones suited for your needs and condition.

Extended Stockings: Stockings that extend to the thigh or waist help reduce pooling of blood in the legs and help prevent orthostatic hypotension. We can help you understand whether these are the right fit for your or not.

Compression Sleeve: These do not treat circulation issues, however, provide extra support to take the pressure off a particular joint. These can also help reduce muscle soreness and help quicker recovery after sports or an injury. The sleeve is like a compression sock but without the foot and the ankle.

Choosing the right Compression Socks: It is extremely important that you get fitted for stockings. Incorrect size and pressure of stockings can actually cause harm.

  • Get fitted properly
  • Follow instructions for properly putting on and removing them
  • Follow all your doctor’s instructions, including when and how long to wear them
  • Monitor any skin changes in the areas that come in contact with the stockings
