Vestibular Rehab

The vestibular system in the brain controls our posture, the ability to maintain balance and our movements as we walk or run. If the brain does not receive proper information from the vestibular system, we are not able to maintain proper posture or balance. As a result, we become more dependent on vision and proprioception. Vestibular rehabilitation therapy is also known as balance retraining therapy. Through a program of non-invasive, painless steps, usually exercises, we help you retrain your body’s balance systems.

If you are experiencing dizziness and balance issues to the following conditions, VRT might be the solution for you:

  • Aging
  • Neck dysfunction
  • Head injury
  • Central nervous system issues
  • Neuropathy (numbness in feet)
  • Vestibular hypofunction or loss
  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

The feeling of losing balance even during normal levels of activity can be very disturbing and frustrating. It can cause:

  • Disorientation
  • Unclear vision
  • Loss of control when walking steadily
  • A feeling that the room is spinning
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Giddiness
  • Weakness
  • Anxiety
  • Panic Attacks

Benefits of Vestibular Rehabilitation include:

  • Partial or complete relief from vertigo and dizziness
  • Helps patient regain balance
  • Improves safety as the balance systems can retrained
  • Increases stability
  • Decrease in Involuntary eye movements
  • Optimizes visual-vestibular interaction
  • Increased confidence in performing activities on a daily basis

How quickly can I see results? As in any treatment plans, the result can vary from person to person depending on the health of the individual as well as the severity of the condition. Some balance issues can be solved quickly and some can take a few sessions. The most important thing is to begin treatment as soon as possible to minimize negative effects of the condition to be prolonged.
